Great Fire of Conriat
In the year of 1789 the navy of the Empire of Valgos encouraged by the Renan army fighting in Rumburg territory sailed across the sea. During the first night of June, as many residents in Conriat were asleep, the fleet destroyed several patrol boats and got within a kilometer of the harbor. The Valgsland fleet, without any formal declaration of war, let loose a barrage at the Sordish main fleet anchored at port and sunk most of the navy, even before the sailors could get to their ships. Then the 80-ship strong fleet loaded incendiary shots and fired barrage after barrage towards the city for three days. The fire spread so fast that many people couldn't even escape their own homes, and burned alive. By the time the Renan family had received the news, it was all too late. The strategically significant Sordish Navy was destroyed, and the Renan Army couldn't do anything due to the ongoing conflict with Rumburg. Records indicate that 90 percent of the city was destroyed that day. More than 40.000 people lost their lives including 8000 sailors who couldn't even retaliate. After this point Valgos claimed sea dominance and the Renan Navy never recovered fully. Many Sordish citizens today regard this incident as the great backstab, but the current Valgsland government condemns the act and detaches itself from the acts of their previous government of Valgos.
